Madras kakdi is a common vegetable in South India and lesser-known in other parts of India. It is an oval, yellow-orange vegetable having green stripes on the outer of its peel. It is available in various sizes, shapes and colours.

Though it is a fruit, it is used as a vegetable by many people. It belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family and has similarities to gourds and melons.

Recipes

 

1. Madras Kakdi Curry

Ingredients: 2 regular sizes madras kakdi, 1 medium size chopped onion, 1 cup coconut scraped, 1 tbsp black gram, pigeon peas, Bengal gram, 4 garlic cloves, 1 slit green chili, 1/4th tsp cumin seeds, coconut oil, salt (according to the taste), turmeric powder and 1 cup buttermilk.

 

Cooking steps: Firstly, peel the kakdi and cut it into pieces. Now, cook it in water after adding a pinch of turmeric and salt to it. To make the paste for curry, dry roast the cumin, Bengal gram, black gram and pigeon peas for 2–3 minutes. Add chopped onions to 1 spoon of coconut oil in the pan. Now take this mixture into a jar and add garlic, green chili and coconut, and make a smooth paste of it. After making the paste, add coconut oil in another pan. Add the paste to it and mix it well. Next. add madras kakdi and buttermilk to it. Your dish is ready to be served with rice or chapati.

 

2. Madras Kakdi tomato-onion Salad

Ingredients: 1 small chopped onion, 2 medium chopped tomatoes, 2 Madras kakdi, 1 green chili, salt as per taste, 1/4 tsp black pepper, 1/4 red chili powder and 1 tsp lemon juice.

 

Cooking steps: Chop all the above vegetables and wash them properly. Add the vegetable to a bowl. You can also add seasonings, mayonnaise, or Amul fresh cream to make it tastier. In the end, add salt and heat it for 2 minutes and then serve.
